Hi Everyone,
On behalf of all of our coaches and myself, we want to thank you for all your on-going support in providing resources to help our players, our coaches, and our program so that it can be one we are all proud of. The facilities project is a challenge that eventually will serve our Baseball Program well - but it is a long process, and we recognize that. Thank you for passing the Baseball Booster Club Budget last night.

I want to thank you for the opportunity to dialogue with you Wednesday about the very difficult decision we had to make to not take the Varsity Baseball Trip this Spring. These decisions are never easy; I welcome anyone to call or to make an appointment with me to discuss any issues connected to our baseball program. My numbers are above, as is my e-mail.

We are committed to making this 7-12 program exemplary. We also are as committed to helping our players become model citizens as well as good baseball players.

While we have made it to the Sectional Finals in 2 out of the 4 years I've coached at Varsity level, we still avidly seek our first Sectional Title, which we last won in 1975. Although we were thrilled as well to win the League Championship last year for the first time since 1998, we continue to keep our goals high. We could not have had our successes without the community support - whether it be the the Booster Club, Penfield Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball,Penfield Recreation or many, many others who have supported us and cheered us on. Thank you...we are all in this together. Wishing you all a peaceful and wonderful holiday season.

Sincerely,
Coach Mike Sinnott

Many thanks to all who have worked so hard to support our program in so many ways. This year, we in Monroe County have a unique school calendar for 2008-2009, as we seem to be the only county in New York that has its Spring Break the 3rd week in April (April 4/19-4/25/09). Schools in New York, as well as in other states, all have their spring break earlier, which impacts planning for any trip proposal when assessing our competition component.

For the past five years, the Varsity Team has participated in the Hawaiian Tropic/Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during Spring Break against teams from other states and from other teams in counties throughtout New York, and very sporadically a team from Monroe County - i.e. Fairport, Pittsford Sutherland, and Brockport. This trip started with the initiative of Coach Gage and Ray Lindenmayer in Spring, 2004, and has continued until now. The Hawaiian Tropic/Mingo Bay Classic has officially sent out their annual invitation for this year with two tournaments to be held from 4/6-4/11/09 and 4/13-4/18/09. We cannot be part of either these tournaments or any others based upon our Spring Break (4/19-4/25/2009).

After consulting with High School Principal, Ron Marro, and Athletic Director, Pete Shambo, the decision has been made not to make the Spring, 2009 Baseball Trip. The reasons are as follows: Reason one and really the most salient is the economy. Thanks to Rich Hoffarth, we had a feedback parent survey for all with the understanding that it was informational only. It was, however, most insightful with an obvious concern about the fiscal concerns. We are staring at the very least a serious recession, which has impacted parents and players. It would be irresponsible for us to recommend to the Superintendant and Board of Education that we go South this coming Spring given the economy and the trip cost. Reason two, and the main reason for the students for making the trip in the first place is the competetive baseball benefit of playing teams from diverse places. We are unable to play anybody from down South which leaves us to make the trip to play our Monroe County neighbors. Given today's economy and urgent messages from our Governor to cut public spending as well as national/global concerns about our fiscal standing, we have no standing to justify the trip. We can argue that it is/will be beneficial for team chemistry, but we can find activities and games in Rochester/surrounding areas that will help us achieve that initiative, as well as to educate our players about having to make sacrifices at appropriate times. This is such a time.

Obviously, this impacts us only this year. I am hopeful that our economy and academic schedule will work more favorably for us next year to possibly consider Myrtle Beach, Cocoa Beach, Disney Baseball, Baton Rouge/New Orleans or any other exciting possibility that would be reasonably priced, as well as being a beneficial experience for our baseball players. This decision impacts only Varsity players. I will be meeting with our Coaches within the next two weeks to look at alternatives for our Varsity players in the Spring.

Also, I want to remind you that Open Gym for baseball begins Monday, 12/08/09 from 8:00-9:30 pm. in the East Gym, and will be supervised on a voluntary basis by our coaches. It will be every Monday unless otherwise indicated via e-mail or on the website. Thank you for your continuing patience, and support, and understanding as we make these difficult decisions.
